REQUIRED GEAR

Campers will be required to wear full safety gear whenever they are on skates at camp. More information on gear and fit here.

Gear required at every camp

  • Quad skates – 4 wheels; no inline skates

  • Properly fitted helmet – roller derby, multi-sport, hockey, or skateboarding helmets provide the most protection for your skater

  • Knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards sized for your skater’s body

  • Mouth guard – SDB skaters prefer SISU remoldable mouth guards

  • Reusable water bottle, full at the start of each camp

  • Snacks, in case skater gets hungry – SDB is unable to provide snacks during camp

  • One dark gray shirt and one white shirt

Where to get gear

  • Buy local! Get Your Bearings Skate Shop has everything your camper will need AND they will help make sure your gear fits properly. They often have reduced-cost used skates on consignment.

League Qualifying Details

Who can join the league

If your skater is between the ages of 8-17 and new to the sport of roller derby, they need to be able to skate unassisted and fall safely. If they aren’t able to do this, we recommend they attend New Skater Camp where skaters learn the fundamentals of the sport, including basic skating skills and safety techniques.

If you have any questions about the New Skater Camp or would like to learn more about joining the SDB derby season in 2025-26, please don't hesitate to email us at newskatercamp@seattlederbybrats.com. We’d be happy to provide you with all the information you need to get started on this exciting journey!

New Skater Camp Attendance Policy

We strongly encourage all skaters (especially those who are new to roller skating) to attend all the camp dates as we begin learning the basics of skating and safety right away. Skaters who are able to attend all dates will build an incredibly strong foundation of skills and gain the most benefit from the experience, regardless of whether they continue on to join the league. We know that everyone has their own pace and learning style, and we’ll be there to help you every step of the way. Some skaters may not meet certain safety requirements to be placed on a team.

Regular Season Information

Once your skater joins the league, they'll be assigned to one of our divisions and will have a specific practice schedule. We offer several different divisions to ensure that skaters are placed in an appropriate level based on their skill and experience. Our coaches will work closely with each skater to help them develop their skills and reach their full potential.

Tootsy Rollers

Ages 8-11 years old. The youngest skaters in the league play the sport in a positional-only (not full-contact) version and learn the basics of roller derby skills. Tootsy skaters practice once a week.

Division 1

Ages 12-18 years old. Div1 skaters play positional-only (not full-contact) and build on basic skills to learn the foundations of roller derby strategy. Div1 practices up to twice a week.

Division 2

Ages 12-18 years old. Div2 are higher skilled and more experienced skaters, playing at a full-contact level. Div2 practices up to twice a week.

UV Regional Travel

Skaters must have one year of full contact before they are eligible to play on our regional travel team. Then they can try out for UV. The Ultraviolets are full contact, talented skaters that practice at least twice a week.

Galaxy Travel Team

Get ready for an exciting challenge! Our Galaxy team is SDB's highest skill, full-contact, elite travel team. These talented skaters compete regionally and nationally in JRDA-sanctioned bouts, and it's an incredible opportunity to be a part of it! With twice-a-week practices, skaters will develop their skills and take their game to the next level.

If you're interested in becoming a part of this incredible team, we'd love to see you at tryouts! Even if you've been on the team before, everyone is required to try out every year to ensure that we have the best of the best representing SDB. The tryout typically happens in late summer, separately from the New Skater Camp tryouts.

Let’s get rolling.
