Galaxy and Ultra Violets Tryouts

Important Details

Girls and gender expansive skaters with one year of roller derby experience are invited to try out for Seattle Derby Brats travel teams, Ultra Violets (UV) and Galaxy. Skaters must be under 18 as of September 1, 2026. Skaters under 14 will be required to complete a waiver. 


Skaters trying out for Galaxy must have one year of full contact experience. 


Skaters trying out for Ultra Violets must have one year of positional roller derby experience. Playing on a full contact team is not a prerequisite, but skaters without contact experience must have completed at least one contact clinic before trying out. Tryouts will start with off and on skates skills. If coaches assess a safety risk, you may be asked to observe the contact portion of the tryout. 


There will also be an additional tryout for UV only on Thursday, June 18, 5:30pm-7:00pm. UV 2026-2027 team selections will be made after the July 25 tryout. Skaters are encouraged to participate in both tryouts if possible (June 18 and July 25).

Coach Vito (Galaxy)

  • Experienced Galaxy and former UV coach

  • Played with Puget Sound Outcast from 2010 until retiring from playing last year

  • Coached I-5 Rollergirls Junior Roller Derby League - Undefeated for two years; Winning record after one loss the following year

  • Coached Grave Danger of Rat City Roller Derby - 2x Championship Winner 

  • Coached Rat City Roller Derby All Star team - Took team from 26th to 9th in the Nation

  • Coached Team USA West - Won Gold at the first Junior Roller Derby World Cup

  • Coached Team USA Roller Derby - Won Gold at the World Cup 

Coach Lacy (Galaxy)

  • Played 13 years of competitive roller derby for Rat City Roller Derby (2006-2019)  and two world cup cycles with USA Roller Derby

  • Created a banked track team, Team Legit, that existed for 4 years; won the banked track national championship in its third year

  • Has been coaching young skaters since 2008 and is passionate about giving skaters a space to grow, build confidence and develop new skills

  • Coached I-5 Rollergirls Junior Roller Derby League 

  • Has hosted dozens of training clinics for all aged athletes around the world to help further the reach and impact of the sport

  • Has coached Galaxy since 2020

  • Knows firsthand how effort and attitude directly correlate to improvement and success

Coach Ro (UV)

  • Began roller derby career in 2010 as a junior skater at a time when junior derby was still evolving into the competitive and respected sport it is today

  • Skated with I-5 Rollergirls and cross trained with Everett Express speed skating, which continues to shape coaching through a strong emphasis on efficient form, power, and edge work

  • Competitive background includes a gold medal at the inaugural Junior Roller Derby World Cup in 2015 and the Junior Derby Olympics in 2016, along with multiple national titles across JRDA and USARS

  • Skated with the Rat City All Stars from 2017 to 2019

  • Began travel coaching in 2014, working with leagues across the West Coast

  • Has been coaching with SDB since 2021, supporting athletes across Division 1, Division 2, and UV

  • Holds certifications in 200 Hour Atha Yoga, Yoga for Athletes, Trauma Informed Levels 1 and 2 through the Community Resilience Initiative, CPR and First Aid, Concussion Safety, Mandatory Reporting, and Adapted and Unified Sports, all of which inform a holistic and athlete centered approach

  • Coaching philosophy is rooted in empowerment, accountability, and the belief that every skater is capable of achieving their goals with consistent effort and dedication

  • Prepares well rounded athletes for Galaxy level play and beyond, while helping each skater build confidence in their abilities so they can show up fully, speak highly of themselves, and carry that belief with them both on and off the track

Coach Larry (UV)

  • Involved in junior roller derby since 2010, first as a parent volunteer of a skater, then board president and team manager of I5 Rollergirls from 2013-2016

  • In 2021 he joined SDB as a co-coach with Coach Ro

  • Coached SDB Division 1 for one year, then Division 2 for two years

  • Has been coaching UV since 2024

  • Passionate about developing strong, fierce, and independent humans through positive reinforcement and accountability to self and team
